Backyard Pond Designs

A garden pool area can create a very unique theme to your home. Many Asian influences can be seen in a lot of typical garden ponds and yet the typical garden pond needn’t follow that traditional path. The design of a backyard garden pond can range of style and look considerably. They can be custom built or as simple as you like. There are many available pre-cast ponds that can be inlaid into a dug out garden area and in a matter of a few hours, you have your garden pond feature.

Other pond designs can develop organically and others can be crafted by landscape designers who will often take into account the plantings and other aesthetic features that will surround the pond. Installing a waterfall feature will be beneficial to help maintain a regular flow of water which will help prevent the pond water from becoming stagnant (an important consideration).

The Newton Tudor remodelling project showing the living room with a magnificently grand fireplace, co-ordinated colors and stunning selection of timeless furniture.

The remodel of this 1930’s Tudor style suburban home in Newton, Massachusetts re-imagines a traditional, compartmentalized layout into a more informal living arrangement for a young family moving to the suburbs from the city.

The project included a full architectural renovation throughout this four bedroom home, as well as the design of all interior finishes, furniture, and fixtures. Rooms in the renovated home open directly to one another, providing long visual and physical connections accentuated by the use of natural materials that echo throughout the house.

The materials lend a contemporary feel to the house while respecting its original historic-revival identity. Repetition, reinterpretation, and an emphasis on natural materials and hand-made craft inform the integrated architectural and interior design concept.

Color and material choices were based on a study of traditional Tudor architecture and design; furnishings, carpet, and decorative lighting were chosen with an emphasis on visible craft and casual family comfort.

Contrast stitching, tufted leather, and embroidered fabrics provide visual texture and a handmade feel to the new, contemporary pieces.

Modern interpretations of traditional patterning were selected for wallpaper and applied unconventionally throughout the house.

Entering the house, the downstairs foyer is flanked by a wall of limestone and an arched entry to the living room, one step down; the living room fireplace, made of a similar stone to the accent wall, can be seen across the space from the main entry.

The limestone wall wraps into the family room and kitchen, becoming a backdrop for a mix of walnut and painted kitchen cabinetry, including a large window seat and family desk area.

The adjacent family room acts as a soft transition to the dining and living room areas beyond with muted pastel tones, round-edged forms, and textured upholstery stitching.

In the dining room, custom wood and wool fabric chairs with a mid-century aesthetic surround a white Saarinen table; the room also includes white wall paneling derived from the original Tudor interior and, on the ceiling, William Morris wallpaper acts as a backdrop to a netted pendant light.

A custom walnut wood panel system, including a built-in TV, covers one entire living room wall, accenting a Tudor-style arch and contrasting with the original fireplace.

The living room includes deep blue fabrics, woven plaid upholstered seating, a tufted leather ottoman, and a David Weeks floor lamp — a deliberate mix of rich textures and traditional design elements with modern line and form.

From the foyer, a new white oak stair with black steel balusters wraps past a new double-height window and up to a second floor landing which doubles as a play area and includes mid-century style furniture and a curated gallery of family photos.

Mid-century accents continue into the master bedroom where seating and side tables with clean lines are complemented by wall-coverings, found objects, and suspended lighting.

The master dressing room is covered in a modern toile wallpaper and has built-in millwork with stitched leather drawer and door pulls, continuing themes found throughout the home.

The tiny house movement has grown exponentially in the last few years. No longer do people crave the large scale multi storey houses of yesteryear. Instead they seem to yearn for the simpler life, living in a home that provides their basic requirements and no more. Hence the increased availability of tiny houses and smaller homes under 1000 square feet. The most popular size of tiny house seems to be between 300 and 500 square feet as it provides a generous feeling of inside space, but still gives one the full sense of having everything you need in a home.

Another aspect to the tiny house market is the increasing use of shipping containers as homes. These are often available in used form for very little investment and yet they provide you with over 100 sq feet of space that also provides a good ceiling height. To replicate the same floor, wall, and ceiling height dimensions in a standard built home, you would be paying considerably more. Given the vast availability of containers in either 20 or 40 foot lengths, the creative DIY person can certainly create a decent new home project from a number of containers. Not only that, but when completed they can look nothing like the original, and many times they look very attractive and desirable as well as providing much more floor space for fewer dollars than building a house from scratch.

So, of you’re looking for a ‘value build’ with limited financial resources (and space), then you may be hard pressed to find better value than considering building one of these home types.

Christmas time is a celebration and means many different things to many people. To some its a time for family and celebrating life together in what is often the rare times when everyone can be together uninterrupted by the day to day activities of living. English Countryside Cottages and Houses

An ancient but quaint example of English countryside cottages in Lower Slaughter beside a river canal.

Old English countryside cottages and houses have stood the test of time. Crafted from old proven materials like stone, rock, and brick they were built often with spaciousness and decoration in mind, and hence why they are still just as desirable today as they probably were back in the day when they were built.

The English countryside is still the heart of life and culture for the British. Despite the fact that most Britons now reside in Cities and towns, there still remains for many of these people, the feeling that a countryside cottage offers something of an idyllic lifestyle and place where it is still possible to have a relaxed lifestyle. The weekends and holidays often see many Britons heading to their beautiful, diverse, and often easily accessible countrysides for some rest and relaxation.

Many parts of the British countryside offer areas full of historic sites, pretty villages, monuments, memorials, protected areas, pubs with tables in the garden, a true part of what still makes England what it is.
