The higher the BTU rating, the more cooling power a unit has, and also potentially the larger the area it can be effective in. The key thing here is you need to buy the unit that is fit for the purpose. Don’t scrimp and go cheap if you need a bigger BTU unit as you’ll end up wasting power, and it just wont do the cooling job you want it to do.

The next consideration is where to place the air con unit. Part of the air conditioning process is the production of hot air that will consequently need to be exhausted from the room. Hence a ducted hose to the outside will be required and this also means, you’ll need to locate the portable air conditioner close to a window in most instances and also near a power outlet.
When it comes to ongoing maintenance, there really isn’t that much to do, with the exception of draining any accumulated condensed water that may have collected. Condensation of water from the atmosphere is a natural part of the air conditioning process, and this can be either removed manually by removing and emptying the water collection chamber, or by pump or gravity syphoning.

Some models of portable air conditioner include a ‘self evaporation’ feature in their design which can minimize (or even eliminate) the frequency with which you need to empty the machine of water.
There is also the obligatory cleansing of filters at determined intervals and perhaps even defrosting from time to time if there is a build up of ice on the coils, and that’s about it.

If energy consumption or energy efficiency is a concern for you, then you should also take into account the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) of the Portable AC unit. This is a measure of the BTU’s consumed for each watt of power. Ideally you should look for units with higher EER’s for better energy efficiency.

A few other pointers for portable air conditioner units. They need approximately 18 inches of space on each side for it to be able to breath, this distance should be open for air flow. Therefore, you shouldn’t obstruct the air flow to or from the unit, otherwise you will lower the EER and the ability for the unit to cool will be compromised. Also, you shouldn’t put the unit too close to the wall, a sofa, or a bed. You need to make sure that you have adequate space before you go out and buy the unit
